It has been over 15 years since South Africa introduced its first quotas to encourage the mining industry to hire women. Despite the significant increase in female participation in the mining industry in recent years, women still face significant workplace obstacles, including a lack of separate bathrooms and limited access to equipment and clothing that are tailored to their specific needs. The area of greatest concern remains the sexual harassment of women working underground. Researchers note that the lack of enforcement of effective sexual harassment policies continues to fuel inequalities and puts the lives of female miners at risk. Photo credit: Flickr/Ollivier Girard
