In Mozambique’s Inhambane Seascape, marine biologist Andrea Marshall emerges as a leading voice in ocean conservation. Co-founding the Marine Megafauna Foundation (MMF) in 2003, she focuses on protecting the region’s diverse marine life, particularly mantas, rays, sharks, whales, dugongs, and turtles. Marshall’s groundbreaking research, tag-and-track projects, and genetic libraries aim to combat declining populations caused by overfishing, habitat degradation, and climate change. Notably, she led the scientific assessment that upgraded the giant manta’s status from vulnerable to endangered on the IUCN Red List. Upholding a climate justice framework, Marshall’s work emphasizes women’s involvement in decision-making for sustainable solutions. Her dedication to preserving ocean life inspires future generations to cherish and protect the wonders of the sea.
