Juana Alicia is an instructor at the Berkeley City College in San Francisco, California, and a muralist. The renowned artist was inspired by Diego Rivera’s murals growing up in Detroit, and paints about her Latina background, immigrants, and powerful women. Her mural “Derrame” was inspired by the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico in 2010, and “Las Lechugueras” shows a pregnant woman picking lettuce in a scenario where it is raining pesticide, making reference to the issue of ecological disenfranchisement of women of color.
