Myra Vargas used to work in the dry cleaning business, but the chemicals threatened her pregnancy, which led her to quit the job. She then founded J&P Cleaners, hoping to be a pioneer in Massachusetts with the method of “wet cleaning” (removing the use of the chemical tetrachloroethylene). The process, however, is quite expensive, and that is why the community group Jamaica Plain New Economy Transition is crowdfunding to raise money for J&P Cleaners and promote a less toxic environment.
