Lois Gibbs’ children started showing signs of illness after her family moved to Love Canal, New York and attended a school built above a landfill and toxic waste site. Gibbs mobilized the community in order to demand for fair compensation and cleanup, and formed the Center for Health, Environment and Justice to help communities advocate for themselves to industry and the government.
