Esther Kiobel, Victoria Bera, Blessing Eawo and Charity Levula are bringing Shell to court in the Netherlands for complicity in the execution of their husbands in 1995. The men were killed by Nigeria’s military government after 300,000 peaceful demonstrators publicly opposed the widespread pollution of Ogoniland. The company denies culpability, but Audrey Gaughran, senior director of research at Amnesty International, who is supporting the plaintiffs, argues that Shell had plenty of evidence about the human rights abuses suffered by demonstrators at the hands of the military government.
